Alyssa Healy scorchers Perth with unbeaten 94
No one should ever doubt the champion qualities of Alyssa Healy after the keeper-batter blasted Sydney Sixers to a drought breaking win in Perth.
No one should ever doubt the champion qualities of Alyssa Healy after the keeper-batter blasted Sydney Sixers to a drought breaking win in Perth.
Healy had not passed fifty in her past four WBBL innings and responded with an unbeaten 94 from 57 balls in a dominant 44-run victory over Perth Scorchers at the picturesque Lilac Hill.
She fell short of a record fifth WBBL century but her innings provided the platform to break a three-match losing streak.
Healy became the sixth batter to pass 2,500 WBBL runs joining her opening partner and captain Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Elyse Villani, Meg Lanning and Scorcher’s captain Sophie Devine.
At the peak of her innings, ex-South African fast bowler Morne Morkel joked in commentary that he would be bowling for “run outs” such was the form of Healy.
This weekend the Sixers returned to the opening partnership that has served them so well over the past seven seasons with Healy and Perry (31) posting their seventh hundred partnership in WBBL competition.
While the change failed against the Melbourne Renegades on Saturday, it paid dividends against the Scorchers with the pair adding 101 from 76 balls in a total of 3-161.
The home side struggled in reply and did not get off to their usual flyer with Devine and Mooney finding it hard to dominate pacer Lauren Cheatle (2-13).
As good as Cheatle was with the ball, her catching was arguably more damaging snaring three victims.
The first of which was Devine who was caught by an airborne Cheatle at mid-wicket from the bowling of Perry for just six from 12 balls.
“(She) just seemed to have go-go-gadget arms for a little bit there, got some nice height and hop, taking it with two hands,” said locked out Sixers teammate Erin Burns in commentary.
Meeting her old club for the first time, West Australian Nicole Bolton claimed the standout figures of 3-11 from her two overs of off-spin coupled with two catches in the outfield.
Bolton picked up two of her three wickets in her first over to her sheer delight and the chagrin of former Scorcher ex-teammates who she spent six seasons with.
“She took 41 wickets for the Scorchers, I reckon she’ll be pretty happy to be starting at the Sixers, especially two wickets (in her first over) against her former team,” Mel Farrell said in commentary.
In Sunday’s other three matches. The Renegades won a thriller overhauling the Strikers’ total of 5-160 with two balls to spare thanks to a matchwinning 73no from Harmnapreet Kaur.
The Thunder made it back-to-back wins defeating the Hurricanes by 37 runs. The Stars, meanwhile, humiliated the Heat by eight wickets chasing down the modest total of 96 with 20 balls to spare. Annabel Sutherland dominated with the ball taking 3-21.
