A stunning Alyssa Healy run-out was the lone highlight as the Brisbane Heat kept their winning streak going
A 10-ball hitting show proved the difference as the Brisbane Heat kept the Sydney Sixers losing streak going
Streaks spiralled in two very different directions as a 10-ball blast by Laura Kimmince propelled Brisbane Heat to victory and heaped more pain on the Sydney Sixers.
Without Australian star Ash Gardner, who was kept out of the Sixers line-up after suffering a concussion while fielding on Sunday, the Sydney outfit raced to 41 in the sixth over with Alyssa Healy hitting out.
But when she was out for 29, the Sixers machine ground to a halt and could only reach an under-par score of 122 at Giants Stadium.
Brisbane was still 30 runs shy of victory when skipper Jess Jonassen was out for 34 with the match in the balance. But Kimmince went berserk with the bat and blasted the Heat to victory with 13 balls to spare.
It was a fourth straight win for the defending champions, while the Sixers slumped to a worrying fifth consecutive loss.
It’s not often a 10-ball innings would be the best of the game, but Kimmince’s knock turned the match.
Coming in with the score 4-85 in the 14th over, and the required run rate slowly climbing, she hit a second ball six, then a four, then another boundary with a reverse ramp off a no-ball as she took down Sixers seamer Stella Campebell. When Kimmince’s short stay was over, she had pounded 23 runs and got the Heat to within 10 of victory with four overs remaining.
But at times the Heat made life hard for themselves particularly when Grace Harris was stumped for 10. Like Tim Paine’s recent Sheffield Shield effort Alyssa Healy took down the stumps from afar.
The Heat batter was practising her shot after nearly chopping on, but didn’t get her foot behind the crease. Healy pounced on the ball and threw down the stumps.
Harris, who was named player of the match, had already done enough to damage the Sixers’s victory hopes. She had scored a run-out with a great throw from short- fine-leg even before she stepped up to bowl for the Heat.
Her impact on the match then went up a notch as she snared the two big wickets of Sixers big bats Dane Van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp in a spell that put the brakes on the Sydney side. Harris finished with 2-13 off her three overs, taking her tournament tally to 11.
In other matches on Tuesday, a partnership of 99 between superbat Meg Lanning and Mignon du Preez, plus three wickets each from Rosemary Mair and Sophie Day, lifted Melbourne Stars to a six-wicket win over Perth Scorchers at Hurstville Oval
Earlier, Hobart crashed to a 64-run defeat after collapsing to 77 all out against Adelaide Strikers. Maddie Penna had set up the victory with unbeaten 56 from 33 balls that lifted the Strikers to 6-141.
