Sean Carroll, head of integrity for Cricket Australia, has been appointed Racing Integrity Commissioner for Victoria.

It is a major promotion for the cricket chief, who will replace Sal Perna, who announced in September he would be stepping down after 10 years in the role.

Carroll, a former police officer, has been at Cricket Australia for more than a decade and is renowned for keeping a tight grip on a game haunted by black market bookmakers and corruption.

Victoria’s Minister for Racing Martin Pakula confirmed the appointment on Tuesday.

“Victoria is the home of Australian racing and the work of the Racing Integrity Commissioner is vital to ensuring we maintain that reputation,” Pakula said,

“I’m thrilled that Sean Carroll has accepted the position and know that he will do a great job, just as Sal Perna has done for more than a decade.”

Carroll said he was proud to have been selected for the role. “I look forward to using my skills and experience to ensure the ongoing integrity of the Victorian racing industry,” he said.

Perna was appointed as Victoria’s first Racing Integrity Commissioner in 2010 and had his contract extended on four separate occasions.

He commissioned several major investigations in his time including into live baiting in the greyhound racing industry in 2015.

He presided over an investigation into safety after Irish stayer Anthony Van Dyck joined a long list of fatalities on Melbourne Cup Day.

“Sal Perna is an outstanding Victorian who has made an enormous contribution to racing and sport in this state,” Pakula said in September.

“Victoria is one of the world’s pre-eminent racing jurisdictions, and this is in large part thanks to the strong focus we have on integrity.”

“The Victorian Government and the Victorian racing industry thank Sal for the dedication and excellence that he has demonstrated in this important role.”
