Former Olympic cyclist and BBC commentator Chris Boardman feared the worst following a horrific crash that left Australia’s Matthew Glaetzer’s race suit torn to shreds and his England rival in hospital.

A horror crash at the velodrome saw Australian Matthew Glaetzer’s bid to win a record three straight Commonwealth Gold keirin medal literally smashed to pieces.

Glaetzer was looking to win his third straight Commonwealth Games gold medal in the event.

But disaster struck when he and England’s Joe Truman crashed heavily as the final lap started leaving the Aussie’s shaken but able to stand but his rival was face down on the track unconscious.

Truman lay motionless for a few moments as medical assistance arrived before being helped into a wheelchair and administered oxygen.

It has since been reported that he suffered a broken collarbone and was transported to hospital.

“Truman is up and that’ll do me to be honest because there was no movement for a few seconds and it made me feel quite sick,” Olympic cycling champion Chris Boardman said on commentary for the BBC.

Glaetzer was in third position when Malaysia’s Shah Sahrom leaned into him and forced him to the boards at 70km/h plus.

The Australian’s bike took out Truman, who went face first into the track.

The fall was so hard that bits of helmet and bike were littered on the track.

Six-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy said he believed Glaetzer was boxed in and fell to the right.

“You’re racing as close as you can to the riders around you. Matt Glaetzer got boxed and went into the back of Jack Carlin and fell to the right, and Joe Truman had nowhere left to go,” he said on BBC TV.

“Your heart rate is at maximum and adrenaline is flowing. In Japan they look like American footballers with pads but it slows you down. But with marginal gains and aerodynamics you try to find an edge where possible.

“It is such a rare thing to have such a serious crash in the velodrome than on the road when you are training.

“It is just one of those things you have to deal with and it reminds us how tough these guys are and how brave you have to be.”
