Lucas Browne calls out Paul Gallen after win on George Kambosos v Devin Haney undercard
‘Big Daddy’ is back in business — and the 118kg former world-champion has a score to settle with NRL star-turned-boxer Paul Gallen.
‘Big Daddy’ is back in business.
Former world-champion Lucas Browne has called out Australian heavyweights Paul Gallen and Justis Huni in the wake of his stunning knockout of Kiwi monster Junior Fa at Marvel Stadium.
The 118kg giant provided the fireworks on the undercard of the George Kambosos-Devin Haney blockbuster when he clobbered Fa with two savage right hands to seal a first-round knockout.
A huge outsider at $13, Browne dropped Fa midway through the first round with a brutal overhand right. A dazed Fa staggered to his feet, but Big Daddy went for the jugular and another furious right ended the contest inside two minutes.
This was a gargantuan boilover. Fa (19-2) had only previously lost to Joseph Parker, going the distance with former Kiwi world champion last year, but the 196cm man mountain had no answer for Browne’s frightening power.
He may be 43 years old, but Father Time cannot erode the dynamite in the right hand of Browne, who is eyeing off rising star Huni or avenging his shock first-round loss to NRL legend Gallen last year.
“I would love to fight Paul Gallen again,” said Browne (31-3), who posted his 27th career knockout.
“Remembering that I got $100,000 for that fight and he got $1.2 million. That’s a big difference.
“I have asked him many times (for a re-match) and he has said no.
“I reckon it would be a great fight with Huni. He is a great talent, very fast, very young, very fit and he is really good.
“I don’t care who I fight, as long as the money is there.
“Like Deontay Wilder, I have the power and when I land my right hand properly, I can knock anyone out in the world.”
MOLONEY TWINS BACK IN TITLE CONTENTION
The Moloney twins, Jason and Andrew, have surged back into world-title contention after the Melbourne maulers scored emphatic wins on home soil.
Jason crunched Filipino Aston Palicte to celebrate a third-round TKO in the fight before the Kambosos-Haney main event, while Andrew needed just two rounds to stop Alexander Espinoza.
Nicknamed ‘Mayhem’, Jason (24-2, 19K0) suffered a world-title loss to Japanese sensation Naoya Inoue in October 2020, but the WBO’s No.3-ranked bantamweight called out champion Paul Butler after stopping Palicte with a superbly-timed right.
“The world-title is coming next,” he said. “There is no bantamweight that can handle my pressure, my fitness and power. I am coming for all my rivals, including Butler.”
Moloney’s promoter Bob Arum confirmed he will begin world-title talks, while Kambosos’ promoter Lou DiBella lauded the 31-year-old’s performance.
“This was Jason’s night on the undercard,” DiBella said. “That was the best he ever looked in his career. It was a tremendous performance, he is ready for a world title fight.”
His sibling Andrew (24-2, 16KO) was equally impressive, with Espinoza’s night ending early after a crunching right hand left him unable to see out of his right eye.
