Jeff Fenech and his protege Brock Jarvis split ahead of blockbuster fight with American superstar Keith Thurman
Jeff Fenech will hold crisis talks with Brock Jarvis after yet another shock bust-up between the pair ahead of the rising star’s blockbuster fight against Keith Thurman.
Jeff Fenech will hold crisis talks with Brock Jarvis following revelations the pair have had another shock bust-up ahead of his protege’s blockbuster fight against American superstar Keith Thurman.
In a bombshell development, Australian boxing legend Fenech told this masthead he has suddenly parted ways with Jarvis — five weeks out from the biggest fight of his career against Thurman on March 12.
Just two weeks ago, Fenech and Jarvis looked as solid as ever when the pair turned up to Fox Sports in Sydney for the formal announcement of the Thurman showdown at the Hordern Pavilion.
But in the past week, relations have sensationally soured between Fenech and Jarvis, to the point where the Hall of Fame legend walked away from his role as trainer.
It is the second time in two years the pair have split, with Jarvis briefly moving to the United States after his first break-up with Fenech in April 2023.
Fenech says he loves Jarvis like a son — the 27-year-old formerly dated the legend’s daughter Kayla for five years — and the ‘Marrickville Mauler’ has not given up hope of smoking the peace pipe to ensure they join forces to plot Thurman’s downfall.
The prospect of Jarvis facing Thurman without Fenech in his corner would be a devastating blow as the Sydneysider prepares to face an American legend who has been beaten just once in 31 fights — by Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao.
Contacted by this masthead, Fenech confirmed he had fallen out with Jarvis and is seeking an urgent resolution just 35 days out from the Thurman bout.
“Yeah, I’m not with him,” Fenech said.
“I love Brock, but he has changed and he wants to make his own decisions. He says he is an adult and he can make his own decisions.
“I hate this. I hate what I’ve done to him.
“Hopefully in the next few days he will come around and we can resolve this.
“That kid has been part of my family for 11 or 12 years.
“I’m disappointed this has happened, but I’m hoping I can fix this before fight time.
“All I want to do is look after Brock Jarvis.”
When the pair first separated two years ago, it is understood the catalyst was a disagreement over weight, with Jarvis wanting to fight at middleweight, much to Fenech’s frustration.
This time, the fallout is multi-faceted.
It is believed Jarvis agreed to face Thurman despite concerns from Fenech, who rates the 36-year-old American one of the best fighters he has seen over the past decade.
Fenech fears Jarvis has disrespected Thurman by labelling the former American welterweight world champion an “old man” who is past his best.
Then came another flashpoint last week.
Sitting side by side on a boxing podcast, Fenech spoke of his pride at Jarvis buying his first home, prompting the fighter to look visibly annoyed at his famous trainer sharing details about his private life.
“You only have to watch that podcast the other week with Main Event,” Fenech said.
“I made a comment that my first priority is the health and safety of my boxers. My second comment was that hopefully they can make some money and own a property and Brock has done that.
“I said I’m proud of him. He hated me for saying that.
“He wasn’t happy at me for saying that, but I was just proud of him.”
Fenech admits he hasn’t been happy with Jarvis publicly sledging Thurman.
“All Brock had to say was I’ll let my fists do the talking, but he’s saying Thurman is old. That shit disappoints me,” he said.
“When I fought, I never disrespected my opponent or bagged them because my hands did the talking.
“That’s all I want Brock to do.
“I wasn’t involved in this decision to take this fight. There’s not a chance in the world I would have taken this fight.
“Brock has to be the best he has ever been to win this fight.”
Should the dynamic duo fail to patch up their differences, it’s uncertain who Jarvis will hire to train him for the toughest test of his 23-fight career.
At the Thurman announcement a fortnight ago, Fenech told News Corp Jarvis had the tools to pull off a boilover.
“Brock is the hardest body puncher I’ve ever worked with,” he said.
“The more I watch Keith Thurman, the harder I think this will be.
“He is an amazing fighter. We have a huge job but I am blessed I have a young man that works his ass off and listens.
“I’m confident Brock can cause one of the biggest upsets in boxing.”
