Outspoken NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith has urged online trolls to “shut up” and think before they spray unfounded accusations on social media about Australian NBA star Josh Giddey, amid an unfolding league investigation.

Giddey faces allegations of potential inappropriate behaviour with a young female, which has prompted vile attacks on social media.

The NBA’s investigation is ongoing – but it hasn’t stopped the internet pile on.

An aggrieved Smith hit out at the trolls via his Stephen A. Smith Show, urging people to reserve their opinions until all the facts are known.

“There comes a time when prudence and responsible dialogue has to take place,” Smith said.

“This man Josh Giddey is currently being investigated by the NBA.

“We don’t know who she was, we don’t know how old she was. We don’t know anything. We know there is an investigation going on.’

“That is all we know. We don’t know anything else.

“You know why Stephen A hasn’t said anything? Because you could get sued, idiots.

“You don’t just go out there running your god damn mouth over something this serious.”

The drama involving Giddey started last Thursday when pictures and videos were posted to social media featuring the OKC Thunder guard with a young woman.

One of the images is of a shirtless Giddey standing behind the woman.

It is unclear when or where the images were taken, the exact age of the female who is with Giddey or the nature of their relationship.

Another video emerged in recent days, appearing to show Giddey and the woman dancing inside a nightclub.

The age of consent in the US varies between states from 16 to 18 years of age. The legal age to enter a nightclub is 21.

NBA spokesman Mike Bass confirmed to CODE Sports the league was probing the veracity of the allegations involving Giddey. There is also currently no police investigation.

Smith expressed his disappointment in trolls for publicly making potentially defamatory comments about Giddey, without knowing any details.

“You use your social media accounts and go to Josh Giddey and flat out accuse him and state it as a point of fact,” he said.

“Make sure you give him your name and address, too, because he could probably sue you.

“You have to wait and see. We don’t have all the information.

“We don’t even have the specific allegations, in terms of its depth.

“If I had a clue, I would have spoken on it, but I don’t know anything and it’s why I haven’t said anything.

“My advice to you all is to shut up and do the same.”
