The Sydney Swans have re-signed one of their most experienced players with key defender Dane Rampe putting pen to paper on a two-year extension with the club.

The 33-year-old has played 221 games in the red and white and has recently returned to the Swans’ side following a neck injury that kept him on the sidelines.

“He means so much to the club,” said coach John Longmire.

“I still remember the first 3k time trial he did, it was outstanding.

“Ever since the moment we put him in the team he’s been outstanding. He’s a massive competitor and such a critical leader for this footy club on the field and off the field.”

A local Sydney boy, Rampe attended Newington College but moved to Victoria to play with Williamstown in the VFL as he tried to get a senior opportunity.

The Swans eventually came calling, taking him as a mature-age rookie selection before the 2013 season.

He won the Swans’ best and fairest in 2019 and has been the side’s co-captain for the past five seasons.

Rampe was unlikely to sign anywhere else but said the desire to finally win a premiership with the side after three grand final losses is driving him on.

“I love the place, I’m really excited about the group, and where it’s at. Obviously, we nearly reached the summit last year and feel as though there’s some unfinished business.”
