Next Richmond coach: Port Adelaide assistant Josh Carr interested in senior role

The Port Adelaide assistant long touted as an AFL coach-in-waiting has declared his interest in becoming a senior coach. But, will it be with the Power or elsewhere?

Port Adelaide assistant coach Josh Carr says he wants “to be a senior coach one day” in the wake of a vacancy opening up at Richmond.

But Carr says while he is “preparing to be ready” for whenever an opportunity comes up he is “not in a rush”.

Carr’s 2004 premiership teammate for the Power Damien Hardwick resigned from his position at the Tigers on Tuesday.

Carr, who arrived at Alberton in the off-season from Fremantle, has been touted as a potential senior coach in the making.

The 2018 SANFL premiership coach with North Adelaide said while he hadn’t given much thought to the opening at the Tigers being a senior coach was still his goal.

“For me, and I think I have said this before, I just keep coaching the way that I want to coach, keep improving and learning and whenever an opportunity comes up I am preparing to be ready for it,” he said.

“I want to be a senior coach one day, but I am not in a rush at all really.

“I think that my path and my progress from when I first started to now is about learning and getting better and that won’t change.

“So when and if the opportunity ever came I would be ready for it.”

Carr, who is the midfield coach at Port, said he was enjoying his coaching at Alberton and was focusing on the job he had to do at the Power.

The Power will take on the Tigers in the first game without Hardwick at the helm on Sunday at the MCG.

Ken Hinkley’s side could have up to four key players back for the clash.

Junior Rioli will be available after a two-game suspension, while Travis Boak (ribs), Charlie Dixon (quad) and Todd Marshall (concussion) are all tests for the Tigers clash.

“Not sure yet what will happen for this weekend,” Carr said.

“With Trav in particular there is no major damage so we will see how he pulls up.

“It is probably similar to early on in the year when he got a knock on his ribs (against West Coast in pre-season).

“Charlie is a wait and see and then Toddy so far so good he has passed all the tests, he probably has a couple more to do but hopefully he can get up.”
