Combined 23: How many Carlton players would get a game at Collingwood?

Who would make a combined team of Collingwood and Carlton players? Josh Barnes took on the task of selecting a combined side ahead of the fierce rivals’ round 4 blockbuster.

Just how many Blues would actually get a game in a combined side with the Magpies right now?

Despite their struggles, it might be more than you think.

In putting together a combined team – based on current form and injury to play this weekend – eight Carlton players made the cut.

That’s not so bad for the 0-3 Blues.

Some players, like Jack Silvagni and Brodie Kemp have played well during the tough start to the year and just pipped out others in this team.

Picking the coach was a pretty easy choice given the fortunes of both clubs so far.

Some unlucky players missed the cut, like Jeremy Howe, Bobby Hill, Harry Perryman, Darcy Cameron and George Hewett.

This is a pretty strong team, but would it be good enough to take down flag favourite teams like Hawthorn, Brisbane Lions or GWS Giants?

CARLNGWOOD MAGBLUES

FB: Jack Silvagni (Carlton), Jacob Weitering (Carlton), Brayden Maynard(Collingwood)
Jack Silvagni’s strong start to the season as a third tall defender deserves recognition and he just pips Jeremy Howe for that position. Mitch McGovern has been OK to start the year. Jacob Weitering and Brayden Maynard walk into the team.

HB: Dan Houston (Collingwood), Darcy Moore (C) (Collingwood), Josh Daicos (Collingwood)

A pretty good half-back line here. A heap of counterattacking bounce from these three. Josh Daicos and Isaac Quaynor (who is on the bench), just pip Adam Saad. Saad has just been going so far this season and made some important errors.

C: Patrick Lipinski (Collingwood), Patrick Cripps (Carlton), Steele Sidebottom(Collingwood)

Patrick Cripps hasn’t been at his Brownlow best so far this year but he would absolutely be picked in the centre. Pat Lipinski is filling the wing role well at the Pies and picking Steele Sidebottom on the other wing is slightly cheating given he has played more inside this year, but in a combined team he can spend some minutes out there. No room for Blues winger Blake Acres.

HF: Beau McCreery (Collingwood), Dan McStay (Collingwood), Jamie Elliott (Collingwood)

All Pies on this line. The many Blues small forwards – like Jesse Motlop, Zac Williams and Lachie Fogarty – just haven’t done enough to make the team.

FF: Brodie Kemp (Carlton), Charlie Curnow (Carlton), Brody Mihocek (Collingwood)

Brodie Kemp may surprise but he has been a good foil as an extra tall. Charlie Curnow is not in good form but he would definitely be picked regardless and Brody Mihocek makes the cut. Harry McKay was not considered for this team.

FOL: Tom De Koning (Carlton), Nick Daicos (Collingwood), Adam Cerra (Carlton)

Darcy Cameron has had an excellent last 30 games but Tom De Koning’s magnetism means he could be the most in-form player in this team. There was only room for one ruck. Nick Daicos is chugging along and Adam Cerra has been in very good nick so far this year.

INT: Isaac Quaynor (Collingwood), Sam Walsh (Carlton), Jack Crisp (Collingwood), Jordan De Goey (Collingwood)

Sam Walsh just squeezes in over George Hewett, who was the most unlucky to miss selection. Harry Perryman also would sit in the emergencies. Jordan De Goey only played against the Dogs last week but nudges out Bobby Hill, who has only been OK to start the year. Walsh has also not been at his best but he still gets a game.

SUB: Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood)

The old stager is a perfect sub. His trademark on-field organisation would come in handy given this team hasn’t trained together once!

Captain: Darcy Moore (Collingwood)

Tough choice against Patirck Cripps but Darcy Moore’s team is going far better and Cripps hasn’t lifted his side from a winless start yet.

Coach: Craig McRae (Collingwood)

Pretty easy pick here unfortunately for Michael Voss.

A combined Collingwood vs Carlton team.

Breakdown:

Collingwood – 15 players

Carlton – 8 players

On the selection bubble: Jeremy Howe (Collingwood), Adam Saad (Carlton), Bobby Hill (Collingwood), Harry Perryman (Collingwood), Darcy Cameron (Collingwood), George Hewett (Carlton), Tim Membrey (Collingwood), Mitch McGovern (Carlton)
