AFL teams round 17: Tom De Koning out of Carlton’s clash with Fremantle

The Roos have been forced into two tough calls on some ageing stars as the Blues’ ruck crisis prepares to face the ultimate test in Perth. Check out the full AFL teams here.

Tom de Koning will miss another game for Carlton through injury, while North Melbourne has dropped captain Jack Ziebell and veteran ruckman Todd Goldstein from its 22 to take on Geelong.

For the second week in a row de Koning has been named and then withdrawn by the Blues.

De Koning was named in the Blues‘ extended squad on Thursday night, but left training early on Friday and has been withdrawn due to injury, with Jesse Motlop coming into the squad to take on Fremantle in Perth on Sunday.

The veteran North Melbourne duo are two of five outs for the Roos, although Ziebell will be the sub against the Cats.

Tristian Xerri will ruck against the Cats in place of Goldstein with debutant Cooper Harvey, Flynn Perez and Lachie Young – who will play his first game of the season – coming in.

Miller Bergman, has also been omitted by the Roos.

Geelong has brought in Irish duo Mark O’Connor and Oisin Mullin.

Adelaide has brought in Lachie Sholl into its 22 while Essendon hasn’t made a change.

St Kilda has brought in Jack Billings and Zak Jones for the Saints big Saturday night clash against Melbourne.

The two Saints haven’t played at AFL level this season because of injury but will be big additions for the Saints for their tantalising match against the Demons at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.

They are two of three ins for the Saints with Zaine Cordy also coming in for Ross Lyon’s side.

Brad Hill, Jack Higgins and Josh Battle will all miss the Demons clash with injury.

Melbourne has called up Charlie Spargo to try and fill the hole left by Bailey Fritsch’s injury.

Spargo is joined in the Demons side by James Jordon and debutant Taj Woewodin.

James Harmes, Kade Chandler and Joel Smith have all been omitted by Simon Goodwin.

Hawthorn has lost Luke Bruest to injury but have recalled young key defender Denver Grainger-Barass, Tyler Brockman and regained Jarman Impey to take on GWS on Saturday at Giants Stadium.

Port Adelaide has turned to forgotten man Sam Hayes to fill its ruck shortage against Gold Coast at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night.

Hayes, who hasn’t played since Round 11 last year, replaces Dante Visentini – who was an extremely late inclusion for Scott Lycett last week.

The Power have also regained Junior Rioli after he was a late withdrawal from the side that beat Essendon because of personal reasons, while young defender Lachie Jones also comes in with Riley Bonner and Quinton Narkle omitted.

The Suns will welcome back captain Touk Miller as they look to ease the pressure on senior coach Stuart Dew.
