The AFL has shortened the 2020 fixture to 17 rounds in a bid to protect the integrity of the AFL season during the coronavirus crisis.

The uncertainty around the start time continues, with the AFL to decide on Tuesday whether to progress with opening round matches this weekend as scheduled, AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said on Monday.

The first four rounds will be as fixtured while the AFL works to recalibrate the season in total. McLachlan said he was determined to maintain as much of the season as possible.

“We will do whatever we need to do. The 17 weeks buys us more time. If we need more time, we will do that,” he said.

AFLW clubs are still uncertain whether the entirety of their season will be completed, or whether drastic measures will be taken to ensure the 2020 premiership is awarded.

Every state league around the nation has been delayed until May 31 at the earliest.

AFL teams will be able to select players from state leagues around the country from as early as next week to provide further depth for lists should matches need to be play in rapid fashion, which could occur as soon as Round 2 if the competition begins on Thursday.

Both male and female players will participate in a teleconference with the AFL Players Association on Monday night.

It is likely there will be pay cuts competition wide, though those matters are still to be finalised. McLachlan confirmed he will take a reduced salary this season.

The AFL chief executive said that if a player tests positive to coronavirus, the competition will be halted for at least 14 days until it can be reset.

McLachlan said the situation remains fluid and it is possible the season will not begin on Thursday night when reigning premiers Richmond are due to face Carlton.

“We know what football means to everyone. We understand how difficult these decisions are for you, particular; y during a time of uncertainty,” he said.

“Despite the size of this one, football will find a way through. We are a game, but not the main game. The main game is looking after the community and keeping people safe.”
