AFL round 13 Carlton v Essendon: News, updates and SuperCoach scores
The AFL’s concussion system is under fire again after Carlton star Adam Cerra was allowed to continue playing after a bump to the head.
Melbourne great Garry Lyon has slammed the AFL’s HIA system after Adam Cerra took over 10 minutes to leave the field for assessment following a clash with Sam Durham.
Cerra was bumped high by Durham when attempting to pick up the ball during the second quarter of Carlton’s win over Essendon in an incident sure to be looked at closely by the MRO.
The Blues midfielder then stayed on the field and wasn’t taken off to complete his HIA until much later in the term.
“The Cerra thing is ridiculous … that is a failure of the system, get that kid straight off the ground straight away and test him,” Lyon said.
“Whether he says he is right or not, he is the last bloke in this stadium who’s placed to say whether he’s right or not.
“Take it out of his hands, you’ve allowed him to run around for 10 minutes with the prospect and spectre of a possible concussion hanging over him.”
At half time, it was reported on FOX Footy that Carlton initially cleared Cerra of concussion and then made the decision to pull him from the field for a HIA as an absolute precaution.
Cerra passed the assessment and then played out the game, but that isn’t expected to save Durham from a suspension.
Former Kangaroos star David King didn’t mince his words when discussing the Bomber’s decision to bump.
“I get really frustrated with these sorts of actions and I don’t have any empathy for the player,” he said.
“This has wheelchair written all over it - this sort of clash - this is exactly why we need to stamp it out … that’s just not on and the games gone past that.
“I don’t know how much education you can put into these players, but the message is still not getting through to some.”
Legendary forward Jonathan Brown was also very critical of Durham’s high hit.
“It’s a dangerous action,” Brown said.
“It’s one of the worst actions - and this is nothing against Sam Durham, we love him as a player - but it is the most dangerous action in our game.”
Lyon saw the incident the same way.
“There’s no question when you elect to cover up with your shoulder and not have any other intention but to make contact, whether it’s to protect yourself or not … no one’s more admired than Sam Durham this year but he’s made a blue there.”
Earlier, North Melbourne snatched victory from West Coast in its first Bunbury home game.
