Powerhouses Richmond and Collingwood will dominate blockbuster primetime slots in the closing rounds of the season as the AFL tinkers with its match fixturing model.

As the league heavily favoured a return to Thursday night football with three consecutive Thursday night games locked in from Round 16 in the penultimate batch of games - round 16-23 - released by the AFL on Thursday afternoon.

It will mark a total of 11 Thursday night games this season, up from 10 last year,

Of the eight rounds released, either Richmond or Collingwood - which has four Friday night clashes - features in seven of 11 Thursday and Friday night games scheduled.

Port Adelaide is the favoured team for Saturday nights and twilight games.

Round 16 will see two matches start at the same time of 1.45pm on Saturday with Essendon taking on Port Adelaide in a standalone game that night.

In Round 18, a super Saturday will see five matches scheduled - including three during the afternoon - with the Sunday 3.20pm timeslot abandoned that weekend.

“After record-breaking crowds and viewership numbers in the first nine rounds, we’re set to launch into the back-half of the season and into the 2023 Toyota AFL Finals Series,” AFL general manager of finance, clubs and broadcasting Travis Auld said.

“We’ve listened to fans and fixtured an additional three Thursday night games, taking us to 11 for the year – one more than 2022.

“The season is wide open, with at least a dozen teams vying for a spot in September.”

The Round 24 fixture remains floating depending on ladder positions heading into finals, with its announcement set for the end of July.

Collingwood and Carlton will meet in another late-season blockbuster.
