Collingwood expects Josh Daicos to take his place in the King’s Birthday clash as Craig McRae rushed Patrick Lipinski into the side for his first game since the preliminary final loss.

The Pies on Sunday night named a side that included Will Hoskin-Elliott and Beau McCreery despite ankle injuries from the West Coast game that limited them at training this week.

And while McRae had talked up the availability of Dan McStay (finger) and Jamie Elliott (finger) neither of them were picked at AFL or VFL level.

The Pies will be desperate to show their midfield might in the absence of the suspended Jordan De Goey and so Lipinski comes into the side as McRae’s best running onballer.

He has not played since that September final after an October shoulder reconstruction and then a second surgery in the pre-season.

The Pies believe he has done the work to slot into that midfield, where Nick Daicos could get a greater midfield role.

Josh Daicos trained outside along with teammate Tom Mitchell for a portion of Sunday’s Collingwood captain’s run despite missing Saturday’s session with flu.

Most of the Collingwood side trained inside in a short session a day after the Daicos brothers cancelled a function at the Bannockburn Railway Hotel because of illness.

Brownlow Medal favourite Nick Daicos was not sick and will again be earmarked for a key role against Melbourne on Monday in front of more than 80,000 fans.

But the Pies remain confident Josh Daicos will be ready to continue his slashing season for the Pies, with one of Reef McInnes or Oleg Markov to be the Pies sub.

Melbourne replaced the suspended Jake Bowey with veteran defender Michael Hibberd, who had missed the previous week with soreness.

James Harmes was the club’s sub in round 12 and was suspended, with the Demons to name a sub from one of emergencies James Jordon or Taj Woewodin.

Collingwood takes on former ruckman Brodie Grundy for the first time since they jettisoned him for Melbourne, with the Pies still paying up to $300,000 of his salary.

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin raised eyebrows during the week when he made clear the Demons valued Grundy more than the Pies.

It will raise the topic of whether Grundy is booed by his former fans even though he was desperate to stay at Collingwood.
