AFL Round 10 teams: All the ins, outs and latest selections news

Collingwood is in a transitioning state but it has lost patience with four youngsters. Meanwhile, it is a new-look Giants under Jarrad McVeigh.

KFC SuperFooty TV 2022 Episode 10

Collingwood forward Mason Cox has earned himself a recall for Sunday’s clash with Fremantle after producing some strong VFL form in recent weeks.

Fellow forward Jamie Elliott has also been picked to return in a major boost for the Magpies, after missing the past five games following shoulder surgery.

Cox has played just two games at AFL level so far this season, but has averaged 18.7 disposals, 6.3 marks, 5.7 score involvements and 1.3 goals from his past three matches in the reserves.

The 211cm giant primarily played in the ruck against Footscray in the VFL last weekend and finished with a whopping 47 hit outs and six clearances.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury has also been named to return after missing last week’s loss to the Western Bulldogs with illness, while livewire small forward Jack Ginnivan has been picked after also missing with illness last week.

The Magpies have dropped youngsters Callum Brown, Caleb Poulter, Aiden Begg and Oliver Henry.

Geelong forward Gary Rohan is set to play his first AFL game of the season against Port Adelaide on Saturday after two games back in the VFL following hip and back issues earlier in the year.

Carlton has recalled defenders Lewis Young and Liam Stocker for its blockbuster clash with Sydney on Friday night, with the pair replacing Zach Williams (calf) and Jack Newnes (managed).

The Swans have brought back defender Colin O’Riordan to replace the suspended James Rowbottom.

An under-siege Essendon has made minimal changes for Saturday night’s Dreamtime match against Richmond, with forward Devon Smith returning to the side and Jye Caldwell (shoulder) and Tom Cutler (omitted) going out.

Richmond’s first-gamer from last week, Bigoa Nyuon, found himself dropped, with fellow backman Noah Balta (hamstring) also going out of the side.

The defensive pair have been replaced by fellow key defenders Robbie Tarrant and Josh Gibcus.

Greater Western Sydney caretaker coach Mark McVeigh has added nine players to an extended squad for his first game in charge against West Coast on Sunday, including key forward Jesse Hogan.

The Giants have lost the smooth-moving Lachie Whitfield to an ankle injury and key defender Nick Haynes to illness.

Hawthorn will welcome a “more vibrant” Tom Mitchell back into the team – and the centre bounce – against Brisbane on Sunday after he struggled with his health for several weeks.

The Hawks finally pulled the trigger and gave the 2018 Brownlow medallist last week off to recover fully after he amassed a modest 14 disposals in a loss to Essendon a fortnight ago.

Changkuoth Jiath (hamstring) returns against the Lions after missing the past month but the Hawks have lost Jack Gunston (ankle).

Mitchell is still averaging a robust 26 disposals this season, but first-year coach Sam Mitchell has used his talents more often up forward despite Hawthorn being the AFL’s worst centre bounce team.

“He got sick, then he didn’t really get over it, then he played and then he went back into another hole after that, so he just hasn’t been his normal, energetic self,” coach Mitchell said.

“Normally, he’s running around like a lunatic and always doing extras, but he was just struggling with fatigue and trying to get through week-to-week, so it was a good idea to give him that circuit-breaker.

“We just had a meeting around planning around centre bounces and he’s up there presenting and the energy in him has already changed, so I’m really hopeful he’ll put in a strong performance this week.”

Rutten opens up on Bombers’ tough week

– Jon Ralph

Essendon coach Ben Rutten admits his team has been conditional with its tackling and pressure all season as he implores his players to respond on the massive Dreamtime stage on Saturday night.

The Dons will back in underperforming midfielder Dylan Shiel to play despite suggestions they should make a selection statement, but are unlikely to have an Indigenous player in their team.

Rutten said on Thursday that the mocking of his club by Luke Parker on Saturday night was not out of line given what his team had dished up.

“The vision was not reflective of the moment, it was of us as a club. The Luke Parker one was reflective of us as a club during the game,” Rutten said.

The coach gave a strong defence of the club’s development and said the improvement from last year’s finals appearance was never going to be linear.

But he did not hold back about the lack of tackle pressure and toughness all season that was once a trademark of so many great Essendon sides.

“Dylan is hurting like a lot of our players are about the way they are playing, that’s the bottom line,” Rutten said.

“We are supporting Dylan, making sure he is very clear with our expectations.

“Dylan is a great person. He adds a lot to us out on the field, we haven’t played with the hard edge we need to consistently enough throughout the season and Sydney was a game where we were way off the level. It’s not about Dylan Shiel, it’s about all of us.

“The players now have all seen the vision, we have been really clear on the game.

“We have reviewed it really hard, we have honest reflections and it’s about us going to work and making sure it doesn’t happen again. It’s about us and how we can rediscover that hard edge.

“I think we have had it at times but not consistently enough. For us to be a consistent finals team we need it unconditionally at training and in every game. What we are seeing at the moment is we are not unconditionally ruthless and have that hard edge we need. What we are after is hardness, is absolutely going as hard as you want and can at the ball, being really clear on defending as hard as you can, standing up for your mates when they need it. It’s not a type of person to do that, we need everyone to do that.”

Rutten said a club that logged only 30 total tackles should have stood up after Parker’s taunting, pointing at Andy McGrath as one of few Dons prepared to fly the flag.

“I thought Andy Mcgrath after the Jye Caldwell incident was the level we expect of our players. It was a fantastic display of leadership, it was someone who really cares, and he wants to make a difference and it’s the quality of person Andy is.”

“We will train it, talk about it, we get an opportunity to train it and we get an opportunity on no better stage than Dreamtime on the G, that’s the environment we want to be playing in.

“We are representing a really significant cause in AFL footy and Australia and it’s where we want to be. Our players have owned it this week and they are the ones who can do something with their actions this Saturday night.”

Caldwell is considered less likely to play given that AC joint injury with Rutten saying Nik Cox (lisfranc injury) might miss only 10 weeks.

Tex Wanganeen has been back from an ankle injury for two weeks and played the club’s most recent VFL game but is the only indigenous prospect who could feature in the Dreamtime clash.

“We are aware of the fact we are playing the Dreamtime game, we have five indigenous boys on our list. At the moment for various reasons none of them are playing but the game represents more than that. Our club has a rich history of indigenous players, a long history there.”
