The launch of a landmark TechnologyOne Graduate Program for QUT students will create clearer pathways to find compelling career opportunities within Queensland business, according to TechnologyOne chief executive Ed Chung.

More than 250 graduates have been through the Brisbane-based global tech company’s Graduate Program since it began in 2005, with many progressing to leadership positions within the company.

The program was designed to attract and develop talented graduates, offering them a strong foundation in the technology industry and helping to build future leaders.

Now as part of a new education partnership between TechnologyOne and QUT, part of the latter’s ongoing commitment to fostering collaborative partnerships with industry leaders, an exclusive TechnologyOne Graduate Program for QUT students will ensure QUT alumni make up one-third of the TechnologyOne graduate intake from 2025 onwards.

In 2025, 45 per cent of TechnologyOne’s graduate hires across R&D, sales and consulting will come from QUT.

“As a Brisbane-born and headquartered business, we are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of innovators and leaders. QUT is at the forefront of innovation in technology, developing job-ready graduates that are eager to advance Australia’s technology industry but many of these highly skilled individuals expect to have to move interstate to find compelling career opportunities,” Chung said.

“By partnering with QUT to provide improved job opportunities for graduates and support for work-integrated learning, we can create clearer pathways for success within Queensland.”

In addition to its graduate program, TechnologyOne has invested heavily in fostering a vibrant innovation ecosystem over many years. This includes hosting hackathons, collaborating with local start-ups, and partnering with secondary schools to promote STEM education to inspire the next generation of tech enthusiasts and ensure a steady pipeline of talent for Queensland’s burgeoning IT sector.

More broadly, Chung said the QUT partnership highlighted the importance of QUT graduates to the growth of the tech sector in Australia.

QUT has been long known for its strong emphasis on practical, industry-relevant education, which has led to many of its graduates making notable contributions to the tech industry.

They include Cori Stewart, an innovator in artificial intelligence and robotics who is the CEO of the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Hub, and Photon Creative co-founder and CEO Kristen Souvlis.

“Over 37 years, we have sought to work with the best and this has helped enable our business to double in size every four or five years. More than half of our 1300 staff are based in Brisbane and many of them are QUT alumni,” Chung said. “The formalisation of our partnership with QUT will see this relationship grow as we provide value above the mission critical software system that we manage for the university. We are committed to actively shaping future leaders in the tech sector.”

For more than a decade and a half, the QUT-TechnologyOne partnership has been integral to the overall student experience at QUT, most recently through the implementation of TechnologyOne’s Software-as-a-Service Student Management solution for educational and operational excellence.

The solution has helped the university achieve its primary objectives of real-time processing, improved transparency for students and staff, and automation in the graduation process, through the creation of an online study plan concept.

The concept has allowed students to auto-complete courses, eliminating the need for manual checking by supervisors, allowing the students to move straight from their final results into the graduation process.

Most importantly, it has created one authoritative source for the studies a student needs to finish to complete their course.

Now, in addition to the new graduate program, the new TechnologyOne-QUT partnership will maintain support for the TechnologyOne Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements and projects for QUT students.

The WIL program supports students studying computer science, information systems, mathematical sciences, as well as law, accountancy, advertising, economics, finance and management.

TechnologyOne has also made an investment of $20,000 a year to the QUT Dean’s Scholars Program that is dedicated to empowering QUT’s most exceptional minds. Under the program, which began in 2002, scholars collaborate with respected academics and industry partners to position themselves as catalytic agents of transformative progress in STEM.

It offers an enriched educational experience, providing scholars with a range of academic, professional, and personal development opportunities.

QUT vice-president (digital) and chief digital officer Huw Davies said Australia’s standing as a major technology player would receive a significant boost from the formalised alliance with TechnologyOne. “Together we are two Brisbane success stories bringing our combined strengths to elevate Australia’s standing in the tech space,” Davies said.

“QUT is at the forefront of innovation in technology and our job-ready graduates will lead from a position of strength through the real-world opportunities this collaboration provides. At the same time, TechnologyOne will see a return on investment as it supports pioneering research initiatives and showcases its vision and operations to future leaders in technology.”
