Large enough to cater, small enough to care

Development of character and care for the whole child are core elements of our educational vision at Oxley College. In a world in which the rate of change is exponential, ensuring that our principles and practices are both evidence-based and contextual is all the more important – this applies to wellbeing as much as it does to pedagogy, and is reflected in the five principles of our Wellbeing Framework: build connections, show gratitude, find meaning, be authentic, and stay fit.

This framework has been derived from positive psychology and the work of leading academic Dr Martin Seligman, “to understand and foster the factors that allow individuals, communities and societies to flourish”. These principles support and guide our wellbeing, academic and co-curricular programs and enable our students – and staff – to thrive.

Building connections is especially important for students starting at a new school. With 50 per cent of year 7 students new to the college each year, Oxley’s House and Mentor systems ensure all students, whether starting their educational journey in pre-kindergarten, year 11, or somewhere in between, are known and cared for. Establishing a culture in which students can be their authentic selves means that strong relationships can be built within year groups, vertically through the school and across the entire staff.

It is an incredibly exciting time to be in education: while change means new challenges, it also brings new opportunities. Whatever these may look like in the years ahead, the values of kindness, courage and wisdom, which are in action every single day, remain at the heart of an Oxley College education.

WHO ARE WE?
Oxley College is an independent, co-educational, non-denominational school from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 located in Burradoo, in the beautiful Southern Highlands. We are a vibrant, respectful, and inclusive learning community, large enough to provide opportunities for our students to find their place, but small enough to care.

ACADEMIC RIGOUR
At Oxley we have a fundamental belief in the education of the whole child. We seek to foster a learning environment that is dynamic, innovative and child-centred through the provision of high-quality learning and teaching. Students are encouraged to enjoy their learning and to apply it to their understanding of the world in all its complexity and of their individual place within it.

OXLEY COLLEGE DISTINCTIVES
Oxley College boasts a range of programs that are distinct to our school. Examples include Cornerstone and our Other Learning Experiences (OLE Week). Cornerstone is a subject that challenges students to critically explore many big ideas and questions that have concerned cultures and traditions since the dawn of civilisation. OLE Week is centred around adventure, it culminates in year 11 students heading “outback”, a 14-day program to Central Australia, where students bond as a year group before they enter year 12.

OUR COMMUNITY
Oxley’s heart is its community and a sense of connectedness. At the core of our community are the students, but wrapped around them are the staff – teachers, maintenance, cleaners, administrators – all focused on the wellbeing of our P-12 students in our care. In a strong partnership with parents and extended families all shepherding young people to adulthood.
