Grace is an 11-year-old on a mission. Competing on the international stage in her chosen sport may be in the talented young athlete’s sights, but achieving this lofty goal requires hours of coaching and practice.

It is tricky fitting school around a training program that is five days a week, which is why Grace is a founding member of Haileybury Pangea, Victoria’s first private online school for students in Years 5 to 12.

Developed by leading private school, Haileybury, the online school launched in Victoria in 2023 and the Northern Territory in 2024. It is ideal for young elite athletes who need flexibility around when and how they study.

“Haileybury Pangea students include talented snowboarders, soccer players, basketballers, equestrian riders, golfers and gymnasts,” says Joanna Baker, Haileybury Pangea Head of Campus.

“Pursuing any sport at an elite level requires discipline, dedication and countless hours of training and competing, so Haileybury Pangea is an ideal choice for those students because of the flexibility.

“Students have more control over their schedules and are supported by teachers who are experts in their field.”

Grace’s day begins at 5.30am with breakfast and training at the gym. She then returns home, logs on to classes and studies with her teachers and Pangea classmates. Once school is over, Grace’s mum, Anna, drives her to the gym for more training before dinner, homework, a shower and a well-earned sleep. Anna says her family chose Haileybury Pangea so Grace could find balance.

“We were looking for a school where Grace could develop and be herself,” she says. “Grace needs a life outside sport, too, but that’s hard with the amount of training.

“Haileybury Pangea has been wonderful because Grace has built relationships with her classmates, maintained her schoolwork, and she is enjoying following her sporting passion.

“The support she’s received from the school has been fantastic.”
