Cranbrook’s two boarding houses are more than just a place to live, they are the beating heart of the school’s community.

Every Cranbrook boarder is personally known and individually appreciated. Our housemasters and mentors strive to create an environment of belonging and strong camaraderie, through direct relationships that are deep and long-lasting.

Our director of boarding, Matt Banes, and his wife Sarah, have led the boarding houses for the past six years.

Banes believes in fostering and equipping each student with skills that will stand them in good stead when they leave school.

“Cranbrook boarding gives our young people an opportunity to live with a diverse group of people and our staff focus on fostering a culture of care and inclusion,” Banes says.

“Living, studying and sharing meals together brings boarders a sense of togetherness and connectedness. Our boarders are incredibly close-knit – with students from every year forming a bond with each other that will last the test of time.

“We look at boarding as a team effort with parents, keeping our families incredibly close and involved at every step along the way.”

Boarding at Cranbrook ensures students maximise their schooling journey. By being immersed in the opportunities the school has to offer, boarders are constantly engaged with the Cranbrook community and contributing to the strong culture of the school.

Through the boarding routines, students are presented with a harmonious balance of academics, sports, arts, and socialising tailored to their individual needs. With state-of-the-art facilities at their fingertips, the boarding students have access to a new world of possibilities.

As a foundation for every student’s success, a domestic haven from a bustling curriculum, and a place of formulated yet tender mentorship, boarding at Cranbrook provides an experience like no other. The Cranbrook boarding houses are much more than just a home away from home, but a foundation for a lifetime of opportunity.

WHO WE ARE

Cranbrook School is an Anglican day and boarding school. We were one of the first independent schools in Sydney to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum School. From pre-school, our students learn through the lens of the IB, and this continues with the Middle Years Programme (MYP), with the option to then study the IB Diploma Programme or choose the HSC in Years 11 and 12. Our close-knit boarding community is at the heart of our school, with students joining us from country towns, neighbouring suburbs and international locations.

WHAT WE ARE MOST PROUD OF

Cranbrook is proud of the strong history of our school, with deep connections going back as far as our origins in 1918. While upholding these celebrated stories and connections, our school continues to progress and adapt in conjunction with the advances of society. Our decision to move to coeducation commencing in 2026, for day students in Years 7 and 11 in the senior school, reflects our commitment to becoming a more inclusive and diverse community.

OUR KEY STRENGTHS
Our strengths lie in embracing all that students have to offer and the school has a culture of celebrating diverse achievements. We foster talent in all areas and ensure students feel safe and supported in trialling new experiences. Our dedicated teaching staff are committed to offering this comprehensive experience, which is vital in shaping more than academic outcomes but well-rounded global citizens. Our curriculum is designed to give our students a greater perspective of the world around them and engage on a global scale.

OUR FACILITIES
The opening of our senior campus’s new facilities in 2022 has heightened the quality of the Cranbrook experience. Set within 4km of the centre of Sydney and overlooking the iconic Sydney Harbour, our students enjoy resources including an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a gym, basketball courts and Redleaf beach as a back yard.
