I don’t know why everyone assumes Oprah must be a Democrat.
To me, she’s always seemed more like a Republican: entirely self-made. Back yourself. Back the individual.
Then again, maybe she doesn’t see herself in the modern Republican Party. I’m not sure Lincoln would either.
Maybe if she runs for President, she’ll do so as an independent. Tough gig. Probably impossible. Like anything was ever impossible for Ms Winfrey.
As if she hasn’t already proved that nothing is going to stand in her way.
Either way, should she do it? Run? After that speech at the Golden Globes yesterday, everyone’s asking that question.
Obviously she should.
Oprah is the real deal. The back story - dirt poor, broken home, teenage pregnancy, dragging herself up by sheer force of will - is one hundred per cent true.
She had a depth, and an emotional intelligence, that stands like grace.

Key to leadership is the ability to lead. To bring people with you. To show them where you’re going and how you’re going to get there.
Churchill had it.
Obama had it, although he probably didn’t have enough of the follow-through.

Oprah’s got it. She’s got everything. She can hold a room. More than that, she can elevate it. She understands business. She believes in self-reliance, and in self-control. She has created wealth and employment. She understands human beings. She’s got name-recognition. She’s smart. Her life story shines like a beacon for anyone who is thinking that maybe the odds are stacked against them. They’re not. Maybe you’re going to have to run a little faster and jump a little higher to even get to the start line, but from there, there’s no stopping you.
She’s not a mollycoddler. She’s for entrepreneurship. She’s for hard-work. She’s for rewards. She’s for justice (if you don’t believe that, go watch Selma, the civil rights movie she made. Also go watch her in The Color Purple, just to remind yourself that she’s an astounding actress, as well.)
She knows the American story. She understands its rhythms. She has done her bit, as an individual, to assist in the process of creating an ever-more perfect union. She’s served poor girls in South Africa, with a school for the bright and the willing.
Should she run? It’s what she’s been doing all her life. Running from her poverty into a brighter future. And now she’s ahead of us, showing the way forward. Run, Oprah, run. Get in there. Show us how it’s done.
