In Aunty’s parallel universe, PM’s problems are just fake news
Victory. Laura Tingle, ABC’s 7.30, August 15:
The debate in the Coalition partyroom about the latest attempt to solve the climate wars was not just a victory for the Prime Minister but a sign of the former prime minister’s waning influence with his colleagues.
PM in strife? No, just News Corp delusions of a last-ditch bid. Barrie Cassidy, ABC’s Insiders, August 19:
Have a look at some of these headlines. The Sunday Herald Sun in Melbourne: “Emergency meeting to save his job. Turnbull on brink.” The Sunday Mail in Brisbane: “Mal’s mortal combat. Dead man walking. PM scrapping signature policies to save himself.” And inside, “Mal’s last-ditch pitch to dodge being dislodged”. The Sunday Mail in Adelaide, “PM’s recipe to ease revolt” and then inside, “PM’s dinner recipe to stave off the knives”. So you see the pattern there. Whatever the government decides. Whatever changes they’ve already made or are about to make are being seen as a desperate bid by the Prime Minister to save his leadership. That’s the context … in the News Corp papers, which is not good news for … Turnbull.
Another great prediction. Cassidy tweets, November 9, 2016:
Trump cannot win. The nightmare is over.
History will be kind to whom? Miranda Devine, The Daily Telegraph, August 18:
Top pollster David Briggs from Newspoll says … “The Coalition should be capable of coming back into this”. But they need “six months of clear air”. No one knows that better than the agitators … History will not be kind to them. But history will be kind to Peter Dutton, who yesterday showed decency and prudence when he resisted manic pressure to thrust himself forward prematurely as leader and destabilise the government.
Clear air needed, but does it come? Pamela Williams, TheAustralian Financial Review, August 23, 2010:
Gillard and her strategy team quickly gathered … Rushing to the polls might look like panic. But she needed clear air after East Timor …
All she needs is clear air. Phillip Coorey, The Sydney Morning Herald, February 27, 2012:
Kevin Rudd and his backers must accept today’s result … Gillard … needs clear air.
The clear air message. James Glenday, abc.net.au, March 23, 2013:
Senior ministers such as Greg Combet were out selling the “clear air” message. “It’s imperative that the Prime Minister has clear air … to … take Labor to the election …”
Short history of clear air not showing up. Glenday, abc.net.au, March 26, 2013:
Simon Crean became the federal government’s “air freshener” last Thursday. “We needed clear air,” he said … But will the leadership spill give Labor the clear air it needs …? “The air was far from clear after McMahon took over as prime minister from Gorton,” says ANU professor John Wanna.
Clear air went to his head? Coorey, The Australian Financial Review, September 13, 2014:
Both parties find clear air to think about policy … Bill Shorten will mark his first anniversary as leader one month from now and both he and Abbott are safe in their jobs. It is inconceivable both will not be there come the 2016 election.
What disease is the Prime Minister swapping and with whom? Headline in TheDaily Telegraph, August 21:
PM swapping a “disease”, says Pyne.
