Everyone likes to rewrite history — Aunty is Ostalgic for kind, friendly communists

Never lonely in East Germany. Anik See, ABC News online, October 9:

The traditional historical narrative is that the fall (of the Berlin Wall) heralded a new, bright era for socialist and communist states desperate for a capitalist system … But … to a large number of East Germans … East Germany’s society had been kinder and friendlier (than the West) … “You never felt lonely,” says Susann … “You never had the experience of fear for other people.”

Never lonely or never alone? John O. Koehler, Stasi: The Untold Story of the East German Secret Police, August 17, 2000:

East German communist leaders saturated their realm with more spies than had any other totalitarian government in recent history. The Soviet Union’s KGB employed … one agent per 5830 citizens … for the Nazi Gestapo, there was one officer for 2000 people. The ratio for the Stasi … (was) one informer per 6.5 citizens … Tiny holes were bored in apartment and hotel room walls through which Stasi agents filmed their “suspects” … Even bathrooms were penetrated by the communist voyeurs.

No fear? Elizabeth Schumacher, Deutsche Welle, February 3 last year:

The secret police were … skilled at invading the minds of the citizens they terrorised … launching a campaign of indiscriminate arrests … “The fear in your head became almost as powerful as having an actual Stasi agent breathing down your neck,” (said) Dagmar Hovestadt, (spokeswoman for) the National Commissioner for Stasi Records … The result of their obsessive surveillance … (was) 111km … of documents … “We’ve had about three million requests for personal files … (people can) see the truth behind things like … what happened to that friend who disappeared.”

Aunty got it right a decade ago. Jennifer Macey, ABC News online, November 9, 2009:

Hartmut Richter … worries about … Ostalgie — nostalgia for the old East Germany … (He was a former prisoner of the Stasi who spent five years in jail enduring) lengthy interrogation and sleep deprivation … (He) helps former political prisoners apply for compensation. But he is angry that many former Stasi employees escaped punishment and now enjoy a healthy state-sponsored pension … (and) he fears that a new generation is growing up that does not understand how oppressive it was to live under communism … “I think it’s disgusting how East Germany is sometimes portrayed. Can you imagine if the history of Nazi Germany was glossed over like that? It would be an outrage,” he said.

Guess who’s to blame for Brett Kavanaugh allegations? Jewish Telegraphic Agency, October 9:

Fliers blaming Jews for the sexual assault allegations against newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh were posted on two University of California campuses, Berkeley and Davis, as well as at Vassar and Marist colleges … in New York state. “Every time some Anti-White, Anti-American, Anti-freedom event takes place, you look at it, and it’s Jews behind it,” the fliers (read, showing) … an image of Kavanaugh surrounded by caricatures of Jewish members of the US Senate with Stars of David drawn on their foreheads, as well as the Jewish billionaire George Soros … (Kavanaugh accuser) Christine Blasey Ford, and the attorney for two other (accusers), Michael Avenatti, are depicted with the words “Good Goy” written on their foreheads. The fliers say they are “Brought to you by your local Stormer book club” … (linked to the) neo-Nazi website, the Daily Stormer.
