Devious GetUp, foreigners and anti-Adani fashionistas plan to kill coal in Oz, not China

Foreign funds. Deborah Cornwall, The Australian, January 14:

GetUp … received a large foreign donation … that was declared just days before a January 1 cut-off date under new federal laws banning foreign political donations to “political actors”. GetUp said the $95,000 from the European Climate Foundation … was earmarked for “research” and … (wouldn’t) be used for … campaigning … in … this year’s federal election.

Devious plan. Brad Norington, The Australian, March 1, 2018:

A lobbying blitz (by GetUp to defeat a ban on foreign donations to GetUp was described by its national director as) “a devious plan”.

Coal kills made in China. Michael Wray, The Courier-Mail, January 13:

Australia’s most famous eco-conscious fashion label, Gorman, and campaigning UK cosmetics retailer, Lush, have funnelled funds to anti-Adani activists, including … GetUp … “To stop Adani building the biggest coal mine in the world in Queensland, we have designed a Coal Kills bag to send a clear message that we think Adani is a bad idea,” Gorman says. … Lush directed all funds from the December sales of its charity pots … “to stop Adani” … (The) Gorman … bags … are made in China.

More coal. Phillip Stalley, The Conversation, December 13, 2018:

China … the world’s leading emitter for more than a decade. … uses more coal than the rest of the world combined. … Beijing has no intention of slowing … its economy simply to protect the environment … Local governments … (built) 259 gigawatts of new coal capacity — roughly equivalent to all the power currently generated by US coal plants.

John Parnell, Forbes, January 10:

China has said it won’t approve wind and solar power projects unless they can compete with coal power prices.

Thin privilege. Alana Schetzer, The Sydney Morning Herald, January 13:

The world has finally started to wake up to … “thin privilege” … (those who) can go into almost any clothes shop and find something that will fit … Body positivity advocate Jenny Lee says … “It’s time to acknowledge thin privilege the way the Left has acknowledged white privilege, class privilege or straight privilege. As a white middle-class person, albeit with working-class roots … I can’t speak for all fat women, and I have barely been able to touch on the prejudice that fat people of colour experience.”

Thin privilege at eco-conscious Gorman? Catherine Bouris, The Sydney Morning Herald, April 18, 2018:

When I first saw Gorman’s dog coats … (I) cooed over the cute dogs in their cute little coats … My second thought … was that Gorman would rather have dogs be seen wearing their products than plus sized women. … They supported same-sex marriage by giving away free T-shirts! … (but) as someone who is both gay and fat, I felt excluded … They use models of colour … (only if they are) tall, thin, and exceptionally attractive … It’s hard to feel overjoyed … (that) French bulldogs and greyhounds will be sporting pieces from one of Australia’s most beloved brands before I will.

Thin privilege? Fat chance. Nine Network News, January 8:

(A woman fired) for commenting on her supervisor’s “natural extra padding” … lost her unfair dismissal claim … (She) wanted the office heating turned on … (but) her supervisor … (said) she didn’t feel cold … (The woman, who) suggested that was because of her supervisor’s “natural extra padding” (was sacked) for breaching … bullying and harassment policy.
