Confused about whether your opinions on Islam are racist?
Chilling confusion between religion and race. Dana McCauley, The Australian, yesterday:
Sam Ekermawi, the Muslim … pursuing the (Nine Network) in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal over comments made by Today Extra co-host Sonia Kruger, will have his day in court … Kruger said in 2016 that she agreed with a proposal to close Australian borders to Muslims to prevent terrorist attacks … Macquarie University academic Stephen Chavura said the tribunal’s decision in the Kruger case marked a “chilling” confusion between religion and race.
Racist! Cleve Wootson and Herman Wong, The Washington Post, April 19:
A creative writing professor at California State University at Fresno (Randa Jarrar tweeted): “Barbara Bush was a generous and smart and amazing racist … I’m happy the witch is dead. can’t wait for the rest of her family to fall to their demise the way 1.5 million iraqis have. byyyeeeeeee.”
Not racist! Randa Jarrar, salon.com, March 14, 2014:
Why I can’t stand white belly dancers. … Arab women are not vessels for white women to … lose themselves in; we are not bangles or eyeliner or tiny bells on hips.
Still not racist! Jarrar, salon.com, March 18, 2014:
I still can’t stand white belly dancers. … when you are part of the dominant culture and live in a country that subsidises the theft of land … from Arab people … maybe think twice before you put on some genie pants and kohl … I’m f..king angry, y’all, at … centuries of dehumanisation, and belly dancing is just the tip of it …
Not reverse racism! Aamer Rahman, YouTube, November 28, 2013:
A lot of white people say … “What if I … said, ‘yeah black people are like this, Muslims are like that?’ You’d probably call me a racist, wouldn’t you?” And I say … “Yeah, yeah I would … They’re like, “Well … don’t you think that’s a kind of … (whispers) “reverse racism?” I don’t agree … I could be … a reverse racist … (but) I would need … (a) time machine, right? And … I’d go back in time to before Europe colonised the world … (and) convince the leaders of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America to invade … Europe … set up some … trans-Asian slave trade where we exported white people to work on giant rice plantations in China — just ruin Europe … so, all their descendants would want to migrate out and live in places where black and brown people come from … I’d … set up systems that privilege black and brown people … and white people would never have any hope of real self-determination. Just every couple of decades make up some fake war as an excuse to go and bomb them back to the Stone Age and say it’s for their own good because their culture’s inferior. And then just for kicks, subject white people to coloured standards of beauty so they end up hating the colour of their own skin, eyes and hair. And if, after hundreds … of years of that, I got up on stage and said, “Hey, what’s the deal with white people? Why can’t they dance?” That would be reverse racism.
Confused? Just remember racism isn’t about race! Michael Brull, newmatilda.com, November 7 last year:
It’s the new “I’m not racist but …” but with an Islamic twist … Person A says something heinous about Muslims. Reply: isn’t that a bit racist? Person A leans back triumphantly … I can’t be racist against Muslims. Islam isn’t a race, it’s a religion … It presents a kind of surface plausibility. After all, it is true that criticising religion isn’t the same as criticising a racial group … The point is … racism isn’t directed at races.
