New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern has replaced Justin Trudeau as CHOGM’s media favourite, getting special favours from other leaders.

The 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London being the Queen’s last as she hands responsibility to Prince Charles to travel for future meetings has made her the star of the show but Jacinda Ardern’s first CHOGM has given her almost equal billing.

The heavily pregnant Prime Minister, expecting her first baby within weeks, got special transport treatment with British Prime Minister Theresa May in her security cavalcade and appeared on the front of The Financial Times taking a selfie with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British schoolchildren.

But when it came to official reception with the Queen it was Ms Ardern who outshone even Mr Trudeau — infamous for his cultural appropriation of Indian traditional costumes — when she appeared in a traditional Maori feathered cloak.

Ms Ardern told The Australian’s London fashion correspondent that the cloak — a Kakahu- was one of two she was offered from a New Zealand contact in London and was various feathers woven into a flax backing.

The kakahu, especially a kiwi kakahu, is a sign of a person of high rank in Maori culture.

Malcolm Turnbull wore a dinner suit.

Ms Ardern also became the toast of Buckingham Palace - literally.

The New Zealand Prime Minister at her first CHOGM was given the honour of delivering one of only two toasts to the Queen at the opulent Buckingham Palace dinner awash with Lords and Duchesses and a cheeky watercress panna cotta.
