Malcolm Turnbull just couldn’t help himself.

As he emerged from a 50 minute meeting with Barack Obama - his last official summit as President of the United States - the Prime Minister turned groupie and pulled out his phone to grab a selfie.

During the meeting, Mr Turnbull thanked Barack Obama for the leadership he has shown the world during their closed door meeting this morning in Mr Obama’s last official bilateral meeting as President of the United States.

Mr Obama assured that the US/Australia alliance would remain as “robust as ever” in a meeting on the final day of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Peru.

Mr Obama also thanked Australian men and women in uniform for their contribution to the fight against ISIS, claiming much of the success of the campaign was attributable to Australia.

He said the aligned interests between the two countries would remain on free trade, regional security, the alliance, international rule of law.

They discussed the tension in the South China Sea, the international fight against terrorism and the need to continue pushing for open markets.

“As a consequence it is not often where I have a meeting where I have nothing to disagree with.....usually there is something to keep us busy but there is a strong alignment of interest between the US and Australia and not only do I wish (Mr Turnbull) luck as he moves forward but I have assured him we will do everything to ensure a strong hand off and continuity with the new administration,” he said.

“I indicated to (Mr Turnbull) my confidence that the US Australia alliance will remain as robust as ever because it transcends party politics.

“We discussed the ISIS campaign ... Australia has been our most stalwart ally when it comes to troop deployments.”

Mr Turnbull praised Mr Obama’s leadership that had demonstrably strengthened the relationship.

“It is great moment and a sad moment to have our last meeting in your capacity as President of the United States,” Mr Turnbull said as the pair emerged from their meeting.

“I want thank you for the leadership you have shown for your country and the world over eight years.

“Thank you for the leadership and the friendship you have shown ...

“The relationship will get stronger than ever but It has been immeasurably strengthened under your leadership and we thank you for it.”
