Aussie nun Patricia Fox to quit The Philippines
Sister Patricia Fox will leave The Philippines on Saturday after a long fight against a deportation bid.
Australian missionary Sister Patricia Fox says she will leave The Philippines on Saturday after a long fight to obtain visa permission to stay, and against a deportation bid by immigration officials.
Her passport was confiscated yesterday and given to intelligence officials. Earlier this year, President Rodrigo Duterte accused her of meddling in internal politics through her involvement in human rights’ campaigns.
“If I don’t go, they will come to get me,” Sister Fox said last night.
Her missionary visa expired and she was allowed to stay only until Saturday on a temporary tourist visa. An application to have that extended was refused yesterday.
“There is no appeal against refusal of a visa, even if it is unfair,” she said. “The case against me has all been just harassment.”
Among other things, Sister Fox, 72, a missionary in The Philippines for 27 years, has been involved in investigations into extra-judicial killings.
“I will not be going voluntarily, but I will be going,” Sister Fox said.
