The car driver allegedly had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit and police allege his five passengers included a toddler without a seat belt.
A Victorian man is facing multiple charges after being stopped for allegedly driving at speeds of 170km/h when his licence was suspended and while also allegedly drunk with four children in his car.
The 40-year-old driver from northern Melbourne was pulled over by police late on Friday while travelling on the Western Highway near Bacchus Marsh.
Moorabool Highway Patrol alleged the man was travelling 60km/h over the limit with a BAC of .107 – more than double the legal limit – and said he did it while driving on a suspended licence with six people in a five-person car.
Police said four of the five passengers were children, one a toddler who sat in the lap of a woman passenger.
The vehicle of the alleged offender, who was stopped about 11.30pm, was impounded by police, who have a heightened presence on the roads over the Easter weekend.
The man is expected to front court in the coming days.
Victoria Police also charged one motorist for allegedly driving 126km/h in a 60km/h zone at Point Cook on Friday night.
Offending drivers are subject to double demerit points over the long weekend as Victoria Police roll out their Operation Nexus, aimed at maintaining road safety and catching offenders.
There were two deaths on Victoria’s roads over Good Friday.
Also on the Western Highway, near Ballarat, a 59-year-old motorcyclist died after losing control and crashing. And in Maryvale, a 76-year-old man and his dog were hit by a car after stepping out from their vehicle on to the road.
