Teenage girl dead after being hit by tram in Sydney CBD

The 16-year-old girl was found with critical injuries on George Street and died at the scene.

A teenage girl has died after becoming trapped under a tram in Sydney’s CBD late on Wednesday night.

Emergency services were called at about midnight after reports a pedestrian was trapped under a light tram rail on George Street, Haymarket and found the 16-year-old with critical injuries.

Police and Fire and Rescue NSW managed to freed the girl, however she died at the scene.

“She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, she could not be revived,” NSW Police said in a statement on Thursday morning.

“Police established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.”

The 52-year-old tram driver has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A report is to be prepared for the coroner.
