Queen Elizabeth and the Duchess of Sussex shared a laugh yesterday on their first official outing together since the royal wedding last month.
The pair also shared a moment of sadness and reflection as they stopped for 72 seconds of silence to mark the Grenfell Tower tragedy in London that happened a year ago.
They travelled on the royal train overnight to Cheshire in England’s north for a joint engagement to officially open a new £1.8 billion ($3.2bn) bridge over the River Mersey.
The Queen, 92, wearing a green coat and hat as a nod to the Green for Grenfell campaign, and Meghan, 36, in an ivory dress from the same designer who made her wedding dress, appeared to enjoy each other’s company as they took in the celebrations before them at three
different events.
They watched a performance by a young group from the Andrew Curphey Theatre Company and visited a group helping Syrian refugees.
Travelling in the royal train, which has individual carriages for members of the royal family, is seen as a momentous compliment to the
Duchess of Sussex and a sign of the royal family’s confidence in her to represent them at public occasions.
The tour came as communities across the UK paused to mark the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, which claimed 72 lives.
The Duchess of Sussex and her new husband will travel to Australia later this year for the Invictus Games, which Harry founded as a way to honour and recognise injured soldiers and veterans.
