COULD the mythical Gold Coast surf break Kirra be back?

IT was the mythical Gold Coast point break that lost its perfect sandbank after part of the adjacent groyne was removed in 1995.

Could Kirra be back?

This picture taken yesterday of a surfer slotting into one of its famous long, green barrels suggests the wave has returned to its 1970s glory.

Not necessarily, says Wayne Deane, 62, who has been surfing there since 1960, and was one of the first in the water when this week’s swell peaked on Thursday.

“We’re in the first stages,” Mr Deane says.

Mr Deane and other locals lobbied the council for years to reinstate the groyne, which was completed last year at a cost of about $800,000.

Mr Deane said this week’s taste of Kirra magic had made some lucky surfers very happy.

“It was a pretty good vibe,” he said.

“Everyone’s pretty excited about what we’ve been surfing.”
