PROSECUTORS in Melbourne are trying to contact Shane Warne - who was enjoying James Packer's wedding festivities on the French Riviera - to arrange for the cricketer to give evidence at a murder trial.

Taxi driver Rajbinder Singh Shahi is standing trial in theVictorian Supreme Court, accused of intentionally accelerating and driving at teenager Xavier Salmon, who died on December 6, 2005, after allegedly being mowed down by the taxi. Mr Shahi faces one count of murder.

Prosecutor Andrew Tinney alleged at the opening day of the trial yesterday that Mr Shahi slammed on his accelerator and drove straight at three teenagers after accepting a late-night fare and then arguing with the boys over money.

Mr Shahi claimed Warne - who he said had earlier been abused by the boys - would support his story that they were acting aggressively.

The trial continues.
