Australian cities are never far from the wildlife as Melbourne proved today with a tiger snake drawing a crowd on Spencer Street near Collins Street.

Sydney may have had a wallaby on the Harbour Bridge but the capture of the injured snake in Melbourne was streamed live on the City of Melbourne’s Facebook page.

The snake handler can be heard saying snakes often come up the Yarra River and up drains but they don’t often venture into the CBD.

Melbourne’s ubiquitous safety bollards proved no barrier for the slithering visitor who posed a danger to anyone within striking distance of its venomous fangs.

The Spencer Street snake is headed for a check-up at the vet after possibly being hit by a car.
