A video has surfaced online of murder suspect Chris Dawson and his twin brother Paul discussing their extraordinarily close bond when they were Queensland teachers.
Update: Chris Dawson arrested
The Dawsons were featured on a TV current affairs segment about the 19 sets of twins among students and staff at the Gold Coast’s Coombabah high school.
The program, hosted by Terry Willesee, reported that “not only do Paul and Chris Dawson both teach phys-ed, they both have three daughters and recently both had the same knee operated on at the same time for the same injury”.
Asked if there was any truth to “twins telepathy”, they replied in unison: “Yes of course there is.”
Chris added: “The closest we’ve ever come to that is on the sporting field, where I can tell where Paul is without having to look around. I just sense his presence near me.”
Paul said: “We’re often trying to ring each other at the same time, things like that. If I go to the dentist, Chris gets the pain.”
The report, posted on YouTube last week, is believed to have gone to air around 1989. Chris Dawson’s wife Lyn vanished from Sydney’s northern beaches seven years earlier, in January 1982.
Two coroners would find, in 2001 and 2003, that Chris should be prosecuted for Lyn’s murder. He was not charged and denies killing his wife.
As the cold case attracts global public interest as a result of The Australian’s investigative podcast series The Teacher’s Pet, the Dawson twins, now 70, have been spending time together on the Gold Coast.
They were last month driving cars with matching number plates — Chris, the younger of the two, is “2 Twin”, and Paul is “1 Twin”.
It is understood they have since replaced the number plates as they lay low and await a decision by the NSW DPP on whether there is now considered to be enough evidence to charge Chris with his wife’s murder.
Police have been conducting a new forensic search for Lyn’s remains at her former home at Gilwinga Drive in Bayview since last Wednesday.
