Police are reopening the Melbourne street that was locked after a man stabbed one of his neighbours.

The man was stabbed in an early-morning attack in the St Kilda apartment block, with the offender still at large and believed to be injured.

Police were called to the scene at 4am after a man and woman were confronted by a man with a knife as they returned to their apartment on level two.

The man was stabbed in the arm and the back before the offender fled.

Armed police are patrolling the streets with fears the knife-wielding man may still be in the area.

The critical incident response team searched the building and remain at the scene.

Neighbours said they reported hearing an intruder knocking on doors in their apartment block hours before the incident.

A man who lives next door to the victim said he was woken by a man at about 1am.

“I heard someone coming and going from the unit for about an hour,” ‘Steve’ told radio station 3AW.

About two hours later, he was again woken by the sound of a woman screaming and police arriving.

The victim has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
