Disgraced property developer Salim Mehajer has been convicted and placed on an 18-month good behaviour bond for intimidating his ex-wife Aysha Learmonth.

The former deputy mayor of Auburn appeared in Burwood Local Court this afternoon via audio visual link, where his lawyer, Zali Burrows argued for a lenient sentence.

The court heard that while Mehajer was like a “sick puppy” and was “hoping they would reconcile” when he intimidated his ex-wife, he has a new partner and “no interest” in contacting Ms Learmonth.

But Magistrate Jacqueline Trad said “there was enough to indicate a certain amount of menace, to know what the victim was doing and when the victim was doing it”.

“It’s not an allegation of a trivial nature,” Ms Trad said. “In my view it is a case that a conviction is not only appropriate, but indeed necessary under the circumstances.”

Ms Trad said the community has “an expectation no matter who you are” matters of domestic violence are dealt with seriously.

Mehajer, who was released on bail in March over an unrelated charges of allegedly staging a car crash, last week returned to Silverwater Remand Centre after he breached his bail conditions.
