Political donor Huang Xiangmo has asked for political parties to return his political donations and suggested Australian spies have accused him of being a “threat”.

“If any of the past donations I made was deemed inappropriate by any political party or political figure, I again propose the option for them to duly return the amount donated without the need to pay any interest. The returned money will be then donated to Australian charitable organisations accordingly,” he said.

The Australian government has cancelled Mr Huang’s permanent residency visa and declined his application for Australian citizenship - a move which has effectively stranded him overseas.

In a statement posted on a Chinese language website, Mr Huang said Australian spies cited his association with the Australian Council for the Peaceful Reunification of China.

“According to ASIO, the key allegation is that I am committed to promoting the peaceful reunification of China as the current chairman of the Oceanic Alliance of Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China and previously the chairman of the Australian Council for the Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China,” he said in the statement.

The peaceful reunification council still operates in Australia.

He repeated his denial that the groups were linked to the Chinese government and said they were “local community organisations” and said the Australian Security intelligence Organisations accused him of posing a threat.

“It is also pointed out in ASIO documents that my business and family ties to China could constitute threats.”

“There are a large number of Australian companies in China, and the scale of their foreign investments far exceeds mine. It will be outright ridiculous to suspect that they are therefore amenable to being manipulated by a certain foreign government.”
