An 87-year-old Melbourne woman has been charged with dangerous driving causing death after police alleged she hit an 86-year-old man who was riding a mobility scooter.

Local media reports said the woman struck the pensioner with her car on Thomsons Road in Bulleen on March 8. It was reported he was trying to cross the street.

Both were immediately taken to hospital but only the woman survived.

“That crossing has always been known to be deadly, I’ve witnessed a hit and run and people running red lights,” local Angelica Kanellakos told the Manningham Leader in March.

“My grandpa was hit by a car, which luckily was only travelling at 30km/h and he’s still alive today. If the limit was perhaps 40km/h the gentleman might still be alive.”

The incident led to a local campaign to reduce the speed limit around the northeast Melbourne suburb.

The woman has been bailed, four months after the crash, and will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court tomorrow for a filing hearing.
