Luke Smith has been charged with assault and obstructing police, following an alleged disturbance at a Brisbane home.
The suspended mayor of Logan has been charged with assault and obstructing police, following an alleged disturbance at a home in Brisbane’s south this morning.
Queensland Police have charged Luke Smith with assault, obstruct police and wilful damage, and he has been denied watch-house bail.
Mr Smith was suspended as mayor of Logan Council while facing charges of corruption and perjury.
He will face court on Monday.
“Logan police have charged a 48-year-old man following investigations into a disturbance at a residence this morning,” a police spokeswoman said.
Police had been called to a residence in Meadowbrook at about 8am this morning, she said.
“Police were called to a reported disturbance at a residence this morning at Meadowbrook,” a spokeswoman said.
After being stood down while facing corruption charges earlier this year, Mr Smith labelled the situation as “a debacle”, saying it was a politically motivated move to remove him from office.
Mr Smith has said he would vigorously defend the charges against him shortly after they were laid by Queensland’s Crime and Corruption Commission.
A CCC spokesman confirmed the arrest was unrelated to its investigation into the council.
“The CCC has not arrested any person today relating to its ongoing corruption investigation into Logan City Council,” the spokesman said.
“As the CCC’s investigation remains ongoing, it not appropriate to comment further.”
