Jarryd Hayne is facing gruelling bail conditions after being charged following claims by a 26-year-old woman that she was badly bitten during a sexual encounter with the NRL star.

The 30-year-old must report to police three times a week and is forbidden from visiting Newcastle, NSW, after he was charged with alleged sexual assault. The former Parramatta and Gold Coast player allegedly met the woman at a house in Newcastle on September 30 after being contacted by her on social media.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told police she sustained injuries, including a bite, during a sexual encounter. She was treated by her doctor and had photographs taken as evidence.

Hayne spent nearly 10 hours at Ryde police station in Sydney’s northwest on Monday after handing himself into Sex Crimes Squad detectives.

The off-contract star was charged with aggravated sexual assault-inflict actual bodily harm on victim, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail.

To meet bail, Hayne was required to post a $20,000 surety. He left the police station about 1.30am.

Sources last week told The Australian the alleged sexual assault had occurred on the evening of the NRL grand final.

Court documents seen by The Australian say Hayne must not assault, molest, harass, threaten or otherwise interfere with the victim. He is also forbidden from entering the Newcastle local government area and must report to The Hills Local Area Command in Castle Hill three times a week. Under his bail conditions, Hayne had to surrender his passport. It is understood the alleged victim was interviewed by the NRL integrity unit before the matter was reported to police last week.

The matter is the second sexual assault allegation being faced by Hayne. He is fighting a civil lawsuit in the US over allegations he had non-consensual sex with a woman in December 2015 when he was playing for NFL team the San Francisco 49ers. He denies the allegation and is fighting the case.

The US case has proceeded as a civil matter after the District Attorney’s Office declined to charge Hayne because of a lack of evidence to prove the crime of rape beyond reasonable doubt.

Hayne is due at Burwood Local Court on December 10.
