Three football fans injured in Melbourne brawl

Drunken footy fans could be banned from pubs, clubs, and other licensed premises for up to two years as Victoria Police cracks down on brawls after AFL matches.

More officers will be attending games on the weekend after three men were injured during a fight at the Medallion Club in Etihad Stadium last Friday.

Acting Commander David Clayton said anyone found misbehaving would be arrested and police would consider asking magistrates to ban them from all licensed premises in the state.

“Anyone found to be drunk, assaulting anybody, engaging in affray, will be arrested and appear at court,” he said.

“Should they be convicted we may consider asking for an exclusion order barring them from licensed premises for a period of two years.”

A 46-year-old Carnegie man has been charged with intentionally and recklessly causing injury, affray, possessing cocaine and resisting police.

He has been bailed and will appear again in Melbourne’s Magistrates Court in September.

Melbourne Stadiums chief executive Michael Green said one man is already set to be banned permanently from Etihad after last weekend’s brawl.

“We will take decisive action against anyone breaching the stadium’s conditions of entry … this is a permanent ban, all events … this will be a first,” he said.

“We will continue to review our security processes in close liaison with Victoria Police.”
