Brother wanted to save Darcey Freeman

AFTER seeing his sister Darcey being "tipped" over the side of the Westgate Bridge, a boy asked his father to "go back".

AFTER seeing his four-year-old sister being "tipped" over the side of the Westgate Bridge, a boy asked his father whether they could "go back" because she could not swim.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court heard this morning that after Arthur Freeman, 36, allegedly threw Darcey Freeman off the bridge, he returned to his parked car in the emergency lane, which had the hazard lights on, and drove back into the traffic.

Prosecutor Gavin Silbert said Mr Freeman's eight-year-old son asked his father while they were driving if he could climb into the front seat and ``go back to get Darcey because she could not swim''.

The first day of Freeman's committal hearing heard the unemployed computer programmer rang his ex-wife shortly before he allegedly threw his daughter off the bridge on January 29 this year.

``(He told her) say goodbye to your children, just say goodbye ... you will never see them again,'' Mr Silbert told the court.

Mr Freeman is charged with one count of murder over his daughter's death. The court heard Darcey died in hospital, having drowned, despite paramedics attempting to revive her.

A passing motorist, who witnessed the alleged murder, also told the committal hearing Mr Freeman was unemotional and had a ``completely neutral look on his face''.

``I basically saw the child tipped over the side of the bridge - I saw hair and limbs as the child left the hands of the person in question,'' Barry Nelson told the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

The hearing continues.
