Barnaby Joyce and his partner Vikki Campion have welcomed the birth of their son.

The former deputy prime minister has confirmed his son, Sebastian, was born on Monday.

He weighed 8 pounds 7 ounces (3.8kgs) at birth.

Sebastian is Mr Joyce’s first son after having four daughters with former wife Natalie.

The couple separated when it became apparent Ms Campion became pregnant after an affair with Mr Joyce.

The scandal cost Mr Joyce his job as Nationals leader and deputy prime minister, while it also forced Malcolm Turnbull to change ministerial standards to ban ministers from having sex with staff.

Ms Campion was the former senior media adviser to Mr Joyce.
