Malcolm Turnbull’s elevation and articulation of a new vision for Australia was the defining political moment of 2015.

Mr Turnbull defeated Tony Abbott in a ballot on September 14 by 54-44, retaking the Liberal leadership in the culmination of a career dedicated to public life. As Prime Minister, h e changed the atmospherics of the national debate and adopted a less combative style, securing the passage of the landmark free-trade deal with China.

He adopted a rhetoric of confidence and opportunity rather than fear and pessimism in the face of global change, revitalising the Coalition in the polls. He promoted more women to cabinet as part of a reshuffle that gave way to generational change. Unveiling a package to tackle domestic violence, he also sought to recast relations with the Islamic community.

The revival in the government’s political fortunes accommodated a renewed debate on reform. Rejecting a rule-in or rule-out approach, it has kept all options on the table as it weighs up a comprehensive tax package ahead of the 2016 election while emphasising innovation and competition reform. And he has flagged a tough response to union governance after the final report of the royal commission.

Readers can nominate individuals such as Mr Turnbull for The Australian’s 2015 Australian of the Year. Print editions contain a nomination form. From community leaders to artists, scientists and sportsman, the Australian of the Year will be judged by a panel of senior editors and announced in The Weekend Australian on January 23.
