VICTORIA'S governor will remain in office for another two years.

Premier Denis Napthine says Governor Alex Chernov had accepted his request to extend his term until the end of June 2015.

The initial appointment was made in April 2011 and Mr Chernov was expected to hold office as the Queen's representative for three years.

But Dr Napthine says it was important to have Mr Chernov continue in the role for longer, considering the upcoming centenary of World War I and the ANZAC centenary in April 2015.

"I am delighted that the governor has agreed to my request that he continue until the middle of 2015," Dr Napthine said in a statement.

Mr and Mrs Chernov had contributed significantly to the Victorian community through many charitable and voluntary activities, he said.

"The governor and Mrs Chernov both show an exceptional interest in the younger generation of Victorians and their achievements and aspirations," he said.
