Victoria coach Chris Rogers laments his side’s loss of Sheffield Shield form
With their season on the line, Chris Rogers says Victoria must answer key questions following a costly defeat to NSW.
Frustrated Victoria coach Chris Rogers says the Vics have “a lot of questions we need to answer” after their third straight Sheffield Shield loss.
Victoria lost to NSW by 76 runs despite a 10-wicket haul from Test star Scott Boland.
The Vics squandered several chances, including dropping Blues batter Ollie Davies, who struck a match-shaping 89, in the first innings.
Rogers said the Vics “weren’t up to the standard”.
“We had some moments in the game, we could have maybe put ourselves in a much better position,” he said.
“Dropping Ollie Davies at first slip in the first innings cost us quite a bit and then with our batting we lost a number of wickets in and around breaks.
“We probably just weren’t up to the standard we need to be if we want to win games of cricket.
“Pretty disappointing with how we played, credit to NSW, I thought they played a really good game.
“We’ve got a lot of questions we need to answer.”
The Vics, after seemingly coasting towards the Shield final before Christmas, have to win their final two matches to secure a top-two finish.
They host ladder-leaders South Australia at Junction Oval in two weeks before travelling to Western Australia.
Rogers didn’t expect to be in a must-win position but says his side has only itself to blame.
“We’ve got two tough games to come and need results in both of them,” he said.
“Playing our last Shield game against Queensland before the BBL break, I didn’t imagine us being in this position and we’ve only got ourselves to blame.
“It’s frustrating … and shows how competitive this league is, but we’ve let too many moments slip and we really need to question why that’s happened.”
