Sydney FC coach Steve Corica was left to lament a host of wasted chances as the Sky Blues’ hopes of reaching the AFC Champions League knockout stages suffered a huge blow with a 1-0 loss the Kevin Muscat-coached Yokohama F. Marinos.

Substitute Ryotaro Tsunoda scored the game’s only goal in the 81st minute to secure the Japanese club its second win from three Group H matches.

The win in Ho Chi Minh City also moved second-placed Marinos four points ahead of third-placed Sydney.

With only the top team from each group guaranteed a spot in the round of 16, the Sydneysiders will be desperate for a far more clinical display when they meet Marinos again on Monday night (AEST).

“What I’m not happy with is our chances which we are not converting into goals, because that is what’s costing us – I say it every game at the moment,” Sky Blues coach Steve Corica said.

“We’ve had opportunities in every game, probably the better opportunities in every game and we haven’t got the results we should be getting.”

English striker Adam Le Fondre failed to convert at least three clear chances against Marinos, while midfielder Max Burgess had a stoppage-time header saved by goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka.

South Korean club Jeonbuk lead Group H with seven points, five more than Sydney.
