Queenslanders flout Covid rules due to confusion over masks

It has been described as one of the most effective ways of stopping the spread, but new rules have residents in this state confused.

Weird masks people are wearing amid COVID-19

Queenslanders are inadvertently flouting Covid‐19 restrictions due to confusion about what is required and where.

Residents from across the state’s southeast were spotted exercising and mingling outdoors on Sunday without face masks, despite it being mandatory.

Some people took to social media to comment on what they’d observed, only to be told they were wrong.

A Noosa local wrote on the community’s Facebook page that only about half of the people walking on the famed Hastings Street on Sunday night were wearing masks.

While some people are wearing masks when outdoors, others are not.

“You don’t need a mask outdoors if you keep your distance,” someone said in response.

Another said: “Incorrect, please be mindful of people with medical exemptions whom are not required to wear a mask”.

Masks are required to be worn in the southeast of the state, Townsville and Palm Island whenever you leave your home.

However, there is one particular exception to this rule that appears to have sparked the latest confusion.

Queensland Health states people in the affected regions are able to go mask free when they are alone outdoors or with members of their household.

This includes while exercising.

They’re also not required to cover their face if they are alone in their car or with members of their household, eating or drinking, and at work and able to physically distance.

Queensland Health Minister Yvette D’Ath moved to clear up some of the confusion on Monday, but didn’t detail exactly how the outdoors exception should be applied.

“Having the mask hooked around your ears and wearing it under your chin, is not wearing the mask,” she said.

“I’m noticing at different places, people walking around with the mask under their chin talking to people.

“That is not going to help you; it’s not going to keep you safe and it’s not going to keep other people safe.”
