Qld election 2020: LNP denies claims leader Deb Frecklington reported to electoral watchdog, weeks out from state election

The Premier has demanded the Opposition Leader answers key questions following reports she had been referred to the election watchdog.

Deb Frecklington 'lied to her electorate' when seeking a seat in parliament

With just weeks to go until Queenslanders head to the polls, the state’s Opposition Leader is at the centre of a political crisis after reports her own party referred her to the state election watchdog.

The ABC reported Liberal National Party leader Deb Frecklington had been referred to the Electoral Commission of Queensland, over alleged concerns about a series of fundraising events that could have violated laws intended to curtail the political influence of property developers.

The LNP has insisted there no such complaint was made.

The ABC reported a number of attendees made donations totalling “almost $150,000” over a series of events, which could have violated laws introduced in 2018 to curb the risk of corruption around government decisions on development projects.

Ms Frecklington addressed the media on Tuesday morning, saying "I stand by my integrity".

She "absolutely" denied the party sought legal advice from the Electoral Commission of Queensland.

"Politicians attend supporters dinners, politicians mix with and go to events with every manner of business people," Ms Frecklington said.

But Premier said it was a "very serious issue", noting property developer donations are against the law.

"There needs to be a full explanation as to who she was meeting with and why she was meeting with them."

The Premier's lieutenant, Treasurer Cameron Dick, doubled down labelling the LNP leader "dysfunctional Deb".

"Deb Frecklington is a reckless leader," he said. "She is is leading a dysfunctional party, and it is exactly what Queensland doesn't need."
